If you’re hiring a notary or notary signing agent for the first time, you may have questions about what we do and how the process works. This FAQ is designed to give you clear answers so you feel confident and prepared for your appointment.
What Is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is a state-commissioned official who serves as an impartial witness to the signing of important documents. A notary verifies identity, administers oaths when required, and helps deter fraud by ensuring documents are signed willingly and correctly.
What Is a Notary Signing Agent?
A Notary Signing Agent (NSA) is a notary who is specially trained and certified to handle loan and real estate documents. Signing agents work with title companies, lenders, and signing services to facilitate loan signings and ensure documents are properly executed and returned.
What Types of Documents Do You Notarize?
Notary services commonly include:
- Power of Attorney
- Affidavits and sworn statements
- Real estate documents
- Trusts and estate documents
- Vehicle title transfers
- Adoption and guardianship forms
- Employment and school forms
- Loan signing services include purchases, refinances, HELOCs, seller packages, and reverse mortgages.
What Identification Is Required?
All signers must present a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID, such as:
- Driver’s license
- State-issued ID
- Passport
- The name on the ID must reasonably match the name on the document being notarized.
Do All Signers Have to Be Present?
Yes. Every person whose signature requires notarization must appear in person before the notary. Notaries cannot notarize signatures for absent parties.
Can a Notary Explain or Prepare Legal Documents?
No. Notaries are not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice or prepare legal documents. The notary can explain the notarial act being performed and the general purpose of a document, but cannot advise you on its contents or legal effect.
How Long Does an Appointment Take?
Most general notary appointments take 15–30 minutes.
Loan signing appointments typically take 45–90 minutes, depending on the number of documents and signers.
Do You Offer Mobile Notary Services?
Yes. Mobile notary services are available, meaning the notary travels to your home, office, hospital, or another agreed-upon location for your convenience.
What Are Your Fees?
Notary fees are set by state law for notarizations. Mobile travel fees and loan signing fees vary based on location, document type, and time of day. All fees are disclosed upfront before the appointment.
What If I Need to Cancel or Reschedule?
Please provide as much notice as possible. Late cancellations or no-shows may result in a fee, especially for mobile or loan signing appointments.
How Can I Prepare for My Appointment?
To ensure a smooth appointment:
- Bring valid ID
- Ensure all signers are present
- Review your documents ahead of time
- Have any required payment ready
- Choose a quiet, well-lit location
